Updating your apps through Google Play

Now that you have some great apps installed on your Android - whether you have just a few or have went wild and installed all the apps - you'll want to keep them all up to date. Apps get updated for different reasons. Sometimes developers offer new features or a new look to things, other times updates address pesky bugs that keep things from being perfect. Updates are important, and so is managing them on our end.

The Play Store app gives us a little leeway with how and when we update our apps. You can let things be more or less automatic and update themselves (apps that need new permissions are never automatically updated) or you can manually go through and inspect each update before it's installed. Both methods have their advantages.

Automatic updates

Sony Mobile:Updating apps through Google Play

If you don't want to look into every app update and would rather things work behind the scenes, you can set your Play Store app to automatically update apps on its own. This is done through the Play Store settings.
Open the Play Store app on your Android and slide out the left menu. Open the settings, and look for the entry labeled "Auto-update apps." Tap on it, and you'll have the choice to update apps over Wifi only, update apps over any connection (this might use lots of data) or to turn off automatic updates. Choose the setting that works best for you.

Apps that require new permissions won't just automatically update themselves without your approval. Be sure to have the "Notifications" box checked, and when an app you have installed needs new permissions to update, you'll get a notification about it in your status bar.
This is a good way to make sure all your apps are on the latest version with the latest features and fixes.
Manual updates

Some of us want more control over what is installed on our Androids, and that includes updates to our apps. Maybe you want to read change logs, or want to read what others are saying about the latest version before you jump in and update. Choice is great, and Android makes it easy to keep a tight reign on app updates.
Once again, open the Play Store app on your Android and slide out the left menu. Open the settings, and look for the entry labeled "Auto-update apps." Tap on it, and you'll have the choice to update apps over Wifi only, update apps over any connection, or to turn off automatic updates. In this case, you'll want to choose to never auto-update apps. You'll need to check this setting because the default is to update apps automatically over Wifi.
Each time an app installed on your phone gets an update, you'll get notified (be sure to enable notifications in the settings!) that the update is available. Tap on the notification and you'll be whisked to the Play Store app page, where you can read the new changes and tap the update button, or ignore the update — whichever you like.
When multiple apps get updated, you'll also have an "Update all" button in the installed tab of your My apps list.

Samsung Galaxy S6 to Sport 'Amazingly Fast' TouchWiz UI; Release Dates Tipped

Samsung has already been reported to be working on a light TouchWiz UI expected to debut on the Galaxy S6 flagship. Now, a new report with new details about the TouchWiz UI on the Samsung Galaxy S6 has surfaced on the Internet.

One of the biggest changes likely to be seen on the Galaxy S6 is the removal of the pre-installed Samsung bloatware (or in-house Samsung apps).

As of now, there is no word which are the apps that will not be pre-installed on the next flagship model. The report speculates that S Voice, S Health, S Note or Scrapbook will not be preloaded, and instead will be offered via Galaxy Apps store.

Sammobile cites insiders to claim Samsung will preload some Microsoft apps on the Galaxy S6, a move likely to be a result of settled contract dispute over patent royalties between both the companies.

Some of the popular Microsoft Office apps likely to be preloaded on the Galaxy S6 are OneNote, OneDrive, Office Mobile (alongside Office 365 free subscription), and Skype.

The report also claims that in terms of performance, the new TouchWiz will be "amazingly fast" compared to the TouchWiz UI version skinned on Android 5.0 Lollipop on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

"Samsung has also adopted a lot of animations and effects that debuted on Lollipop - we can already see some of these effects in motion on Lollipop on existing Samsung devices, and it looks like the visual experience will be even better on the Galaxy S6," it adds.

The report also lists some UI changes from the new TouchWiz such as a revamped default keyboard app; more theme options; colourful Samsung apps; app drawer to include 4x4, 4x5 and 5x5 icon layouts; music app to still run in full screen mode, and the dialler app is described as "green as grass."

In other news, a Samsung employee has posted vacation blackout periods, tipping the possible release date of the next flagship.

PhoneArena received the tip from the alleged Samsung employee according to whom the first blackout periods in coming months are March 22 to March 30 and another on or around April 19.

The publication speculates that the first blackout period in last week of March could see the launch of Samsung Galaxy S6 while another blackout period in April might see the launch of the anticipated curved-display variant of Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S6 flagship, likely to be dubbed Galaxy S6 Edge, or Galaxy S Edge.

Samsung in all probability is set to launch the Samsung Galaxy S6 flagship and the curved-display variant, Galaxy S6 Edge at the Galaxy Unpacked 2015 event scheduled for March 1.

The company on its Twitter account replied to a user saying that the Galaxy Note II will receive the update, but there is no further information.
On Wednesday, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 first started receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop update in Poland, and on Thursday in South Korea, reported Sam Mobile.

Sony Xperia T3 gets the Android 4.4.4 KitKat update

Sony Xperia T3

Sony has issued a new firmware upgrade today, this time for its Xperia T3 smartphone. That said, this isn't Android 5.0 Lollipop we're talking about, even if that is technically the latest iteration of Google's mobile OS.

Instead, Sony has made the Xperia T3 run what is the last variation of KitKat, namely Android 4.4.4. This represents a rather minor bump for the T3, which launched last summer running Android 4.4.2.

And since it's not a big jump, there aren't a lot of new things inside the new software. You do however get the Bluetooth Unlock feature, and some stability enhancements which should be welcome.

On the other hand, the 4.4.4 update for the Xperia Z2 brought over quite a few features first seen on the Z3. That's not the case here, presumably because the T3 is just a midranger, and not a flagship offering.

The new software for the Xperia T3 has been seen rolling out in both India and Russia, and we assume more markets will follow. The update is going out for both LTE and 3G models. After applying it, you'll be on build 18.1.A.2.25.
